Scott McCormick, owner of Sanford, FL-based Velocity Powerboats, has announced the acquisition of Checkmate Powerboats. The Checkmate molds and assets will be relocated to Velocity’s 40,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Sanford, FL.

“I’m excited to bring the Checkmate brand into the Velocity family,”  McCormick said. “Pete Caldwell has done an exceptional job, highlighted by the 2024 Boat of the Year Award for the new 24-footer. I’m honored to carry his legacy forward.”

Caldwell will assist during the transition, offering his expertise on lamination schedules, performance setups, and dealer relationships to ensure a smooth integration.

“I’m excited about this transition and confident it’s the right move for the company,” Caldwell said. “Having seen what Scott has accomplished with Velocity Powerboats, I’m eager to see his vision brought to the Checkmate lineup.”

Velocity Powerboats currently manufactures 14 models, ranging from 22 to 43 feet across sport boat and center console categories. With 48 years of boatbuilding experience, Velocity offers full in-house construction, paint, and upholstery—enabling faster build times and delivery. The company plans to establish two dedicated production lines to support future growth.
