National and World Champion offshore racers Myrick Coil and Tyler Miller are joining forces again this season to compete in the highly competitive 500R Factory Stock class, piloting the renowned #7 MTI 390XR catamaran under the T/S Motorsports banner.
Both seasoned champions, Coil and Miller bring an impressive resume of offshore success. The duo has seen podium finishes piloting boats such as Monster Energy/M•CON in Pro Class 1 and M•CON/Monster Energy in Super Cat. Coil has also claimed National and World Championships in the Super Stock and Super Cat classes alongside throttleman Rusty Williams and Johnny Tomlinson, driving for Performance Boat Center.
This marks the first time Coil and Miller will race together in the MTI 390XR, a vessel formerly piloted by National/World Champion Taylor Scism, now Vice President of MTI. While taking on this new challenge, the pair will continue to campaign the Monster Energy/M.CON 438 Skater, powered by Mercury Racing 1100 Competition engines in Pro Class 1.
The collaboration came together during a conversation at April’s Desert Storm event in Lake Havasu, AZ. MTI President Randy Scism recalled, “I mentioned to Myrick in passing that if he was interested in driving again, we could talk. Later, I followed up and asked what he thought about driving Taylor’s boat—with Tyler as his partner. He was all in.”
Miller expressed his excitement about the opportunity: “I was super stoked—and honestly humbled—to be asked. Myrick and I work really well together in the cockpit. There’s a strong level of trust between us, and now we’ve both got kids watching us from the shoreline. That gives everything more meaning.”
The MTI 390XR has been freshly outfitted with Mercury Racing 500R engines, but has yet to hit the water since the repower. “After we installed the new engines, I found out I was pregnant,” said Taylor Scism, who is stepping back from racing this season. “So we never got a chance to properly test the boat. I can’t wait to see what the boat can really do. I completely trust Myrick and Tyler with it.”
Her father, Randy Scism, is equally optimistic. “We have five World Champions in three MTIs this season. This is the strongest Pro Class 1 field we’ve ever seen,” he said. “With the launch of the World Powerboat Racing Association (WPRA), we’re witnessing the most elite level of offshore racing to date.”
With the 2nd Annual XINSURANCE Offshore Race at Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks set for June 21–22, Coil and Miller are in full preparation mode. “We’ve spent hours testing for Pro Class 1,” said Miller. “We ran five sets of props and made two laps with each. We’ve dialed it in as best we can. It’s a great boat in flat water, and on that tight course, getting out front early is everything.”
The pair plan to begin initial testing of the MTI 390XR next week, with eyes set on making a bold debut at the upcoming Shootout Offshore in Lake of the Ozarks.
