The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has sharply curtailed its 2026 Offshore Racing Series, confirming that the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge will serve as the IHRA National Championship in Sheboygan, WI (Aug. 6-9). This will be the series’ final event of the year.
In an official announcement released on June 29, IHRA leadership revealed extensive revisions across its powerboat and auto-racing programs, driven by operational budgets that outpaced projections amid aggressive early-season expansion. The organization is pausing further 2026 offshore dates to regroup, restructure and lay a more sustainable foundation for a stronger 2027 campaign aligned with the long-term vision of IHRA owner and CEO Darryl Cuttell.
Earlier 2026 offshore events in St. Petersburg (March), New Orleans (April), Cocoa Beach (May), and Lake of the Ozarks (June 12-14) proceeded as planned and are now in the rearview mirror. Plans for additional stops, such as a potential Orange Beach event in September, have been set aside for the remainder of this season.
IHRA President Dustin Farthing addressed the decision directly, calling it “extremely difficult” given the passion and investment from racers, teams, sponsors and fans. He stressed that the changes stem from a commitment to long-term success rather than any doubt in the divisions’ potential.
Farthing noted that rapid growth in professional operations, prize purses, event production, media exposure and a racer-first environment outstripped initial timelines and budgets. The organization is now focusing on operational restructuring, budget realignment, venue development, media enhancements, sponsorship growth and refined long-term scheduling.
The goal, he said, remains building premier powerboat racing properties that deliver first-class experiences. Planning for a refreshed 2027 schedule is already underway, with additional details on venues and initiatives expected in the coming months.
The offshore revisions are part of coordinated changes affecting IHRA’s other marine series. The F1 Powerboat Series will conclude its 2026 campaign with the Alton Powerboat Nationals (July 17-19 in Illinois). The Outlaw Drag Boat Racing Series will wrap with the Spring Creek Marina World Finals in San Angelo, TX (Oct. 2-4).
For offshore powerboat enthusiasts, the spotlight now turns squarely to Sheboygan. The Midwest Challenge on Lake Michigan will serve as the season’s championship finale, bringing together top teams for high-stakes racing in a proven Great Lakes venue that has hosted successful events in prior years.
IHRA has applied similar belt-tightening measures across its motorsports portfolio. On the same day as the powerboat revisions, the sanctioning body announced cuts to its drag racing schedule, removing four originally planned events (Darana Dragway in Milan, MI; Empire Dragway in Leicester, NY; Darana-Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, KS; and Atlanta Dragway) to focus resources on facility upgrades and ensure events meet its standards for safety, professionalism and fan experience.
While the abbreviated schedule may disappoint some participants and fans eager for more races, IHRA leadership frames the move as a necessary reset to deliver on the ambitious vision for professionally run, well-funded, and sustainable powerboat racing moving forward. Speedboat will continue monitoring developments, including any updates on 2027 plans and the upcoming Sheboygan showdown. The waters off Sheboygan promise one final high-octane chapter for the 2026 IHRA Offshore season.
While IHRA consolidates, rival series Race World Offshore (RWO) is maintaining momentum with a four-event 2026 National Championship calendar sanctioned by APBA and aligned with UIM rules. The season kicked off with the Atlantic City Sports Offshore Grand Prix (June 26-28) on the New Jersey coast, delivering high-speed action, fan zones and evening entertainment. Three more stops remain: the XInsurance Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, IN (July 31 to Aug. 2), the Clearwater Offshore Nationals in Florida (Sept. 25-27), and the culminating Key West Offshore World Championship Week (Nov. 1-8). This compact yet high-profile schedule positions RWO as a steady alternative for teams seeking consistent national-points racing amid industry shifts.
