Performance Boat Center’s offshore racing duo of driver Myrick Coil and throttleman Rusty Williams will launch their 2021 Super Stock race season at the Thunder on Cocoa Beach event May 20-23 with a new sponsor. The pair’s Wright Performance 320 competitor has been re-christened Performance Boat Center/FASS Diesel Fuel Systems, after the Marthasville, MO-based firm that markets fuel and air separation solutions for diesel pickups and class 8 trucks around the world.
Performance Boat Center co-owner Brett Manire told Speedboat that the alliance came about of the two companies’ shared interest in speed, performance and competition—to say nothing of the fact that FASS President Brad Ekstam owns a Wright Performance 420. “He’s into what we’re doing,” Manire says, “and I’ve got about 15 diesel trucks running the FASS system, and practically every truck in the pits has a diesel on it. So I called him, and he said, ‘I’m in!’ So he’s going to get his feet wet with the Super Stock boat.”
FASS was designed to improve fuel mileage, horsepower and torque, Ekstam tells Speedboat. “That was our first goal, which we achieved. Then we found that some of the side benefits included increasing injector life, and we also do awesome in cold-weather performance.” He says his passion for power makes his alliance with Performance Boat Center’s Super Stock competitor a logical move.
“I’ve always wanted to go down the Keys and watch the World Championships,” Ekstam says. “I have a serious need for speed. If you could make a lawnmower go fast, I’d probably be on it.”
He worked out a unique deal with PBC to acquire their Wright Performance 420 demo boat prior to building an all-new, redesigned 420, due for delivery later this year. “It’s supposed to be even lighter, and a little bit more narrow in the cockpit,” he says. “We’re putting four seats up behind the windshield, so you’ll be able to accommodate eight passengers total.”
Manire already has quite a bit of product knowledge about FASS (which stands for Fuel Air Separation System). It’s a combination diesel fuel lift pump and fuel filtration system designed to improve a diesel truck’s fuel mileage, engine performance and extend the life of your diesel injection system. “Basically, it takes the oxygen out of diesel fuel and gives pure diesel to the injection system,” Manire says. “I lost a couple of truck engines to aerated fuel, so now all my trucks have the FASS diesel systems on them. It’s a great product to extend the longevity of your expensive diesel truck.”
Manire says that Coil and Williams are committed to participating in all of the major stops in the OPA/P1 season piloting their award-winning Wright Performance hull. “Myrick says, ‘Complete domination.'”
